Understanding the Caño Cristales
Caño Cristales is a Colombian river in the Serranía de la Macarena, a muntain range in the central part of the country. It is a tributary of the Guayabero River, which means that the water eventually ends up in the Orinoco River.
From roughly the end of July to late in November, the Caño Cristales looks especially stunning due to the aqautic plants that grow here, including the red Rhyncholacis clavigera (earlier named Macarenia clavigera). During this period, the river is vibrant display of red, yellow, green, blue and black colours. The R. clavigera grows attached to rocks and favours parts of the river where the current is really fast. The plants are green when they are young but will develop yellow and then red hues as they age. They are not endemic to Caño Cristales; they are also found in a few other rivers in the region.
Caño Cristales is a fast-flowing river and it includes many rapids and waterfalls. The water in this river is very clear, making it easier for us to see the vibrant colours of the aquatic plants. The water is clear because the river is low in nutrients and sediment.
There are plenty to ”giant kettles” in this river. When a hard rock fragment falls into a cavity, the water current will spin it around, and it will gradually carve the cavity wall, making the ”kettle” bigger and bigger.
Despite persistant rumours to the contrary, many animals live in Caño Cristales – including fish and turtles.
Serranía de la Macarena, the mountain range which is home to Caño Cristales, runs through an area touched by three different major ecosystems: the Andes, the Llanos and the Amazon Rainforest. The Andes is the world´s longest mountain range, while the Amazon Rainforest is the world´s largest rainforest. Los Llanos is a vast grassland plain located east of the Andes.
When is the best time to visit Caño Cristales?
The ideal time to visit Caño Cristales is during the wet season, from late May to early December. This is when the Macarenia clavigera plants bloom, giving the river its characteristic colors: red, yellow, green, blue, and black.
